Avalanche Strikes Sikkim, Killing Seven Tourists
Tragedy on Gangtok-Nathu La Road
Seven people lost their lives and a dozen were injured when an avalanche struck the Gangtok-Nathu La road in Sikkim on Tuesday afternoon. The avalanche occurred near a mountain pass to the Chinese region of Tibet.
The victims were part of a group of tourists who were traveling to Nathu La, a popular tourist destination. The avalanche struck suddenly, trapping the tourists under a thick layer of snow.
Rescue workers were quickly dispatched to the scene and began searching for survivors. However, the heavy snow and poor visibility made the search difficult.
The Indian government has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was "deeply saddened by the loss of lives" and that the government was providing all possible assistance.
